About Us

About Us

GoGreenNext is an EU funded Horizon Europe project with the ambition of supporting cities and regions to achieve their climate targets by implementing novel nature-based approaches. We have 19 partners across the globe including Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Canada and the USA. In our pilot areas Cork (Ireland), Klagenfurt (Austria), Malta (Malta) and Päijät- Häme Region (Finland), we will address biodiversity-climate-planetary challenges by future proofing through evidence-based policy development.

OUR PARTNERS

Nature-based solutions (NBS), or actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously benefiting people and nature, are among the strategies that have emerged to reverse the degradation of nature. In cities, vulnerability to climate change and environmental degradation is high due to dense populations, critical infrastructure, and at-risk communities. On the other hand, cities offer an opportunity to accelerate the implementation of current solutions aligned with emerging strategies and policy initiatives (e.g. New European Bauhaus, 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities) combining to form what is termed a just green transition.

GoGreen Next will develop a comprehensive evidence-based policy oriented approach to convey how ecosystem health, human health and climate change are connected.

Objectives & MissionGoals

01
The scientific lens we will apply is the planetary health approach which is being tested in this project. Planetary Health and One Health are the latest in a new generation of multidimensional health approaches.

02
To ensure sustainable planetary health policies which promote co-benefits to human health and the health of ecosystems are supported with strong evidence.

To conduct naturalistic research through walking interviews to ensure reach to diverse groups of stakeholders (e.g. citizens, key actors, policymakers) to assess understanding. Validate new measures of citizens readiness for engagement in sustainable behaviours and evaluate existing and forthcoming programmes longitudinally in the urban pilots areas.

03
To advance knowledge on earth natural systems and human health interactions by applying an integrated research approach to advance our understanding of future changes in the four pilot areas in relation to climate change, biodiversity and health.

To draw on the expertise within the consortium from the Health Environment Research Agenda for Europe (HERA). We also aim to ensure the role of the social sciences and humanities are strengthened in the research by embedding new concepts from psychology and law.

04
To develop and validate a range of novel tools for policymakers to enhance predictive capability and preparedness as well as to envision prevention strategies to deal with the impacts on human health of changes or degradation of ecosystems.

Conduct climate modelling based on 2030 timelines for the four pilot areas with analyses of the impact on air pollution and urban heat island at the micro-climate level.

05
To engage with citizens in the four urban pilot locations to gain an understanding of their readiness for behaviour change and support their participation in decision-making and advocacy relating to their future health, sustainable behaviours and conservation of ecosystems, while accounting for gender, intersectionality and the challenges of diverse communities.

Develop expert-led knowledge systems and climate mitigation dashboards to support decision making and problem-solving for policymakers and employ virtual reality of future scenarios.

06
To engage in communication, dissemination and exploitation to advance the proliferation of policy driven planetary health perspectives in the European and Global context.

Pilots

Our pilot areas include four biogeographical locations across Europe including Cork (Ireland), Klagenfurt (Austria), Malta (Malta) and Päijät- Häme Region (Finland). For this project to be successful we must work across different levels from municipal to national and in different climate types. GoGreen Next works at the city level for both Cork and Klagenfurt, regional in Finland and at the national level in Malta.
