Project Green (Malta)

Project Overview

Matla has a population of over 500,000 people and is often referred to as a city-state. The climate of the Maltese Archipelago is typically Mediterranean, with distinct winter and summer seasons. The project will work in Ġebel San Martin in Żejtun, where a low-traffic street will soon be converted into a vibrant community garden for local residents. Project Green, who work closely with fellow partner EcoStack Innovations, is a new agency launched in 2023 by the Maltese government, entrusted with enacting a seven-year re-greening plan to ensure that all citizens have access to nature. They are committed to bettering the quality of life for the people of Malta with the creation, reconstruction, maintenance and invigoration of parks and green spaces across the island.

Climate Plan, Urban Heat Island, Inclusive Space

Ambition

Malta has signed up to the The National Energy and Climate (ENCP) Plan to further improve their climate goals. The ENCP is a ten-year plan that addresses all five dimensions of the EU Energy Union: decarbonisation, energy efficiency, energy security, internal energy markets and research, innovation and competitiveness.

Population & Climate

There are 531,113 residents living on the island with Malta making it one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Their urban population is also large with 416,000 living in urban areas. There is a massive immigrant population in Malta, with 22.2% of their population being made up of immigrants.

Malta is a highly urbanised area with 80% of it’s population residing in urban settings. With urbanisation comes environmental impacts and the urban heat island effect is one that affects Malta harshly. Urban sites in Malta show a higher average temperature than the countryside with some being on average 1.50C hotter.

Outcomes of Pilot

Climate Mitigating Solutions

The Maltese government is very proactive about seeking climate mitigating solutions to ensure long term viability of its communities and the surrounding environment. GoGreen Next can help develop inclusive space that has a major climate impact with resilient infrastructure and is connected to citizens.
