Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Wörthersee, Klagenfurt is the capital city of the southern Austrian province of Carinthia and aims to be climate neutral by 2030 with the help of GoGreen Next partner Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. It was awarded the EU Mission Label for Climate-neutral and Smart Cities in 2023. Klagenfurt strives to develop climate-neutral neighbourhoods in the city and subsequently achieve balance sheet climate neutrality. For this purpose, we work on the implementation of key projects, promote innovations and actively involve stakeholders. The project will work in Heiligrngeistplatz, with the introduction of temporary pop-up parks. Klagenfurt already has a great quality of life due to its already implemented measures against climate change.

EU Smart City, River Flooding, Nature-Based Solutions
Klagenfurt has great ambitions of reducing their carbon output as they’re part of the 100 Climate Neutral EU cities. Klagenfurt Smart City has the ambition to further progress towards achieving key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To monitor progress and to inform the City’s climate policy, an annual monitoring report is presented to the city council based on which the implementation strategy is updated.
The population of Klagenfurt stands at 102,527 people with 120.1km2. Klagenfurt has a migrant population of 20,000 which makes up about 20% of the city’s population.
Klagenfurt lies along the Glan River, leaving it at risk of river flooding if climate mitigation strategies are not met. In Summer 2023, torrential rain flooded the south-east of the city affecting 15,000 homes. Along with this, there is an increased chance of storms with climate change which would only worsen their issue.
GoGreen Next aims to help Klagenfurt in implementing Nature-Based Solutions with urban natural living rooms designed with resilient infrastructure and citizens in mind. The target groups for these solutions are local communities and tourists. These will aid the conservation of biodiversity across the city of Klagenfurt.
