Introduction

Go Green Overview

GoGreenNext is an EU funded Horizon Europe project with the ambition of supporting cities and regions to achieve their climate targets by implementing novel nature-based approaches. We have 19 partners across the globe including Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Canada and the USA. In our pilot areas Cork (Ireland), Klagenfurt (Austria), Malta (Malta) and Päijät- Häme Region (Finland), we will address biodiversity-climate-planetary challenges by future proofing through evidence-based policy development.

In recent years, global, European, and national policies have emerged in an attempt to address climate change. In cities, climate change issues have arisen asymmetrically among at-risk communities in urban conurbations. Therefore, along with our partners we aim to create an all-inclusive evidence-based policy approach to show how ecosystem health, human health and climate change are connected.

Objectives & MissionGoals

01
To ensure sustainable planetary health policies which promote co-benefits to human health and the health of ecosystems are supported with strong evidence.

To conduct naturalistic research through walking interviews to ensure reach to diverse groups of stakeholders (e.g. citizens, key actors, policymakers) to assess understanding. Validate new measures of citizens readiness for engagement in sustainable behaviours and evaluate existing and forthcoming programmes longitudinally in the urban pilots areas.

02
To establish a collaborative transdisciplinary approach to research and innovation based on the synergies between public health, One Health and planetary health perspectives.

To draw on the expertise within the consortium from the Health Environment Research Agenda for Europe (HERA). We also aim to ensure the role of the social sciences and humanities are strengthened in the research by embedding new concepts from psychology and law.

03
To advance knowledge on earth natural systems and human health interactions by applying an integrated research approach to advance our understanding of future changes in the four pilot areas in relation to climate change, biodiversity and health.

Conduct climate modelling based on 2030 timelines for the four pilot areas with analyses of the impact on air pollution and urban heat island at the micro-climate level.

04
To develop and validate a range of novel tools for policymakers to enhance predictive capability and preparedness as well as to envision prevention strategies to deal with the impacts on human health of changes or degradation of ecosystem.

Develop expert-led knowledge systems and climate mitigation dashboards to support decision making and problem-solving for policymakers and employ virtual reality of future scenarios.

05
To engage with citizens in the four urban pilot locations to gain an understanding of their readiness for behaviour change, and support their participation in decision-making and advocacy relating to their future health, sustainable behaviours and conservation of ecosystems (e.g. citizen science), while accounting for gender, intersectionality and the challenges of diverse communities.

06
To engage in communication, dissemination and exploitation to advance the proliferation of policy driven planetary health perspectives in the European and Global context.

Engage in an innovative multi-channel approach to communication, to ensure reach to the target audiences including those across the digital literacy divide as well as co-host major events with our clustered projects to amplify messaging.

Our Pilots

Our pilot areas include four biogeographical locations across Europe including Cork (Ireland), Klagenfurt (Austria), Malta (Malta) and Päijät- Häme Region (Finland). For this project to be successful we must work across different levels from municipal to national and in different climate types. GoGreen Next works at the city level for both Cork and Klagenfurt, regional at in Finland and at the national level in Malta. All of these areas have their own cultural distinctiveness and climate challenges. Notably, they all share an ambition for sustainability.

Planetary Health

GoGreen Next is one of five projects funded under this call and collectively they form the new Planetary Health cluster. Planetary Health is a solutions-oriented, multi-dimensional health approach focused on analyzing and addressing the impacts of human disruptions to Earth’s natural systems on human health and all life on Earth. The cluster, launched on July 2nd, 2024 comprises GoGreen Next, SPRINGS, TULIP, MOSAIC and PLANET4Health. These projects which will work collectively through joint deliverables, co-hosted events and a shared strategy to promote evidence-based policy to support global Planetary Health.
